Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Mohamed Salum, Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), emphasized today that the maritime sector is a significant contributor to the economy, offering numerous opportunities.
Speaking at the 49th International Trade Fair (Sabasaba) in Dar es Salaam on July 7, 2025, Salum stated that TASAC’s participation in the exhibition aims to educate the public and explore further opportunities within the maritime industry.
TASAC’s Core Responsibilities
Salum outlined TASAC’s primary role in overseeing maritime safety, ship operations, and port areas, including the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
“TASAC’s work includes inspecting water transport vessels, addressing security issues at ports, and controlling marine environmental pollution caused by water transport vessels,” he explained.
Addressing the Seafarer Shortage
Salum also urged citizens to pursue maritime studies and acquire professional training, noting that there’s still a challenge in enrolling in these courses.
“There’s still a global shortage of seafarers, so we need to produce many more,” he stated, highlighting a significant employment opportunity for Tanzanians.
He added that TASAC is responsible for regulating port activities, including issuing permits for suitable and unsuitable areas for port construction.
