Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Tanzania now boasts a sufficient and reliable power supply, a significant achievement lauded by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko. He credited this success directly to the substantial investments made by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in the energy sector. Dr. Biteko also commended TANESCO for their diligent efforts in ensuring stable electricity access for citizens.
Speaking today, July 10, 2025, during a tour to inspect natural gas-fired power generation projects at the Kinyerezi I, Kinyerezi I Extension, and Kinyerezi II stations, Dr. Biteko highlighted the completion of major power generation initiatives, including the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), which alone contributes a massive 2115 megawatts (MW) to the national grid.
While acknowledging TANESCO’s extensive work, Dr. Biteko noted that while some areas previously faced power supply challenges, the situation has now significantly improved. To meet the growing population’s demands, TANESCO plans to boost generation at the Kinyerezi III station, expanding its capacity from an initial 600 MW to a more robust 1000 MW.
“I want to state before you, my dear friends, that President Samia is the driving force behind all these successes,” Dr. Biteko declared. “She has made massive investments in the energy sector, which is why this Ministry received 2.3 trillion shillings in the last budget. Her primary goal is for citizens to have reliable electricity.”
The Deputy Prime Minister also took the opportunity to praise TANESCO for their remarkable improvements in customer service. He specifically highlighted their quick response to power emergencies and the enhanced efficiency of their call center, which now serves citizens at no cost. “Major improvements have been made in serving the public; I see great efforts underway,” Dr. Biteko emphasized.
During his visit, Dr. Biteko was accompanied by several key officials, including Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Hon. Felchesmi Mramba; Ilala District Commissioner, Hon. Edward Mpogolo; and TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange.
