Dar es Salaam, July 7, 2025 — In a bold push to promote clean cooking energy among Tanzanians, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has distributed free electric stoves to lucky visitors at its pavilion during the ongoing 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba.
Speaking to journalists today at the DITF grounds, TANESCO’s Managing Director, Eng. Lazaro Twange, said the initiative aligns with the government’s directive to encourage the transition from traditional, polluting cooking fuels to cleaner alternatives, such as electricity.
“It is the directive of Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan that we move away from unsafe and polluting cooking fuels. The electric stoves we are giving out today are energy-efficient and have been tested to cook a full meal using less than one electricity unit,” Eng. Twange stated.
Visitors to the TANESCO pavilion not only received education on the benefits of clean cooking energy but also participated in a Q&A challenge. Those who answered correctly were awarded the electric stoves — a move that aims to make clean cooking accessible and practical.
“We are grateful for the huge turnout at our booth. Through this engagement, Tanzanians have demonstrated a real understanding of the importance of switching to clean energy. Winners of the electric stoves are now ambassadors — we urge them to lead by example,” Twange added.
Also present was Sadock Mugendi, Acting General Manager of the Electricity Transmission and Distribution Construction Company (ETDCO), a TANESCO subsidiary. He highlighted the company’s recent milestone: completion of a major rural electrification project spanning 383 kilometers from Tabora to Katavi, with a voltage capacity of 132kV.
“This is a major achievement. We are now turning our attention to ongoing electrification projects in Mbeya and Katavi. We thank the government for continuing to entrust us with these critical infrastructure assignments,” Mugendi said.
Meanwhile, Mathew Mwangomba, General Manager of the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC), announced promising developments in geothermal energy exploration in Mbeya Region.
“Our team is currently in Mbozi, Mbeya, validating geothermal resources. We’ve confirmed a potential capacity of 70 megawatts, which will contribute to both direct use applications and the national grid. TGDC is open to both local and international investors eager to join us in this sustainable energy venture,” Mwangomba stated.
As Tanzania moves toward universal energy access and a greener energy mix, initiatives like TANESCO’s stove giveaway and major infrastructure investments signal a strong commitment to inclusive, clean, and affordable energy for all.
