Mkalama District Commissioner Commends UDSM for Innovative Agricultural Technologies

Dodoma, Tanzania – The District Commissioner for Mkalama, Moses Machali, has praised the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) for its significant contributions to the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in the country. Speaking on August 6, 2025, during his visit to the UDSM booth at the Nanenane Agricultural Exhibition in Nzuguni grounds, Machali expressed his admiration for the various technologies developed by the university’s students and researchers.

A “Father of all Colleges”

Machali referred to UDSM as the “father of all colleges” in Tanzania, emphasizing its unique and pivotal role in the nation’s development. He noted that the university has produced many of the country’s leaders and continues to invest heavily in practical, innovative solutions.

He highlighted several impressive innovations on display, including:

  • Cosmetic Products: Machali was particularly impressed by young female students who developed valuable products like anti-wrinkle oils, demonstrating UDSM’s focus on hands-on innovation.
  • Modern Fish Farming Technology: He observed a new machine for collecting fish fry without using hands. This technology significantly reduces fish fry mortality, which is often a major challenge in traditional methods. According to experts, using hands can endanger over 25% of the fry, a risk largely eliminated by the new machine.
  • Digital Agricultural Solutions: Machali also praised UDSM’s digital initiatives, such as mobile apps that connect farmers directly with agricultural service providers. This streamlines access to essential services and advice, saving farmers from long trips to agricultural offices.

A Call for Collaboration

The District Commissioner urged local fish producers to visit the UDSM booth to learn about these new technologies, stressing that they could greatly improve production and reduce losses. He concluded by congratulating UDSM and its College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences for their immense efforts and contribution to national development.
