His passing at Muhimbili National Hospital in 2011, after battling diabetes and undergoing tests for bladder cancer, marked the end of an era for Tanzanian radio and performing arts.
A Life Dedicated to Media and the Arts
John Luwanda was a household name in Tanzanian broadcasting. He dedicated his life to shaping the airwaves of Radio Tanzania, where he became widely known for his remarkable voice and exceptional storytelling. His deep understanding of radio drama made him a beloved figure in the artistic community. Even after retiring in the early 1990s, his contributions to the entertainment world continued to inspire many.
A Quiet Life After Retirement
After stepping away from the microphone, Mzee Luwanda embraced a peaceful life in Goba Village, where he pursued farming and livestock keeping. Despite his departure from the media industry, his influence and mentorship remained evident, especially among artists and broadcasters who drew inspiration from his work.
A Family Man and a Legacy That Lives On
Luwanda was more than a broadcaster—he was a devoted husband, a loving father to six children, and a proud grandfather to twenty grandchildren. His passing was a profound loss, but his memory continues to live on through his family, his work, and the countless people he touched throughout his life.
Final Resting Place
Following his passing, burial arrangements were made at his home in Goba Village, where he was laid to rest on a Saturday, surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues who came to honor his life and contributions.

Though John Luwanda is no longer with us physically, his voice, teachings, and impact on Tanzanian media and arts will never fade. He remains a legend in the history of Tanzanian broadcasting, remembered for his warmth, dedication, and storytelling prowess.
