TANESCO’s Managing Director Inspects Power Substation Expansion Projects in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Lazaro Twange, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of three major power substation expansion projects in Dar es Salaam. These projects, located in Dege, Gongolamboto, and Ubungo, are a strategic effort to meet the growing electricity demand in the region and surrounding areas.

During his inspection on August 7, 2025, Twange highlighted the importance of these projects for the economic hub of Tanzania. “These projects are part of our efforts to strengthen TANESCO’s infrastructure to meet current and future needs,” he stated.

Project Details

The expansion projects involve upgrading substations with new, more powerful transformers to increase capacity.

  • Dege Substation: A new 120 MVA transformer is being installed, replacing the old 60 MVA unit. The project, which also includes the construction of new 33 kV distribution lines, is 56% complete and is expected to be finished by April 2026.
  • Gongolamboto Substation: This project involves installing a new 125 MVA transformer, a significant upgrade from the previous 50 MVA unit. The work is 80% complete.
  • Ubungo Substation: This substation is being expanded with a massive 300 MVA transformer.

Enhancing Power Reliability

Twange emphasized that the completion of these projects will significantly improve the stability and reliability of the power supply for residents in Dar es Salaam and neighboring regions, including Pwani. He specifically addressed residents of Kigamboni, assuring them that their current power challenges will be resolved once the new infrastructure is operational.

“Having a reliable electricity service is fundamental for economic and social activities, and for providing essential services like education and health,” Twange said.

He commended the engineers and project managers for their professionalism and dedication, noting that the work is progressing on schedule despite various challenges. Twange concluded by stating that the tour was part of TANESCO’s commitment to ensuring the company is ready to serve its customers more efficiently through timely infrastructure improvements.
