TANESCO Unveils Confidential Whistleblower Portal to Tackle Corruption and Infrastructure Theft

Esther Mnyika, DAR ES SALAAM – August 4, 2025 – In a decisive move to enhance transparency and accountability, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has launched a secure, confidential whistleblower portal aimed at curbing corruption, infrastructure sabotage, and internal malpractice.

Announcing the development in Dar es Salaam, Ms. Irene Gowele, Acting Director of Communications and Customer Services at TANESCO, emphasised the portal’s role in protecting informants and encouraging public participation in safeguarding the nation’s electricity infrastructure.

“TANESCO has faced significant challenges that undermine reliable service delivery—including infrastructure theft and vandalism, corruption by a few dishonest staff, and revenue loss due to preventable damage,” Gowele noted. “This new portal offers a secure channel for employees and the public to report unethical conduct, knowing their identities will be protected.”

The whistleblower system will allow users to confidentially report cases of corruption, theft of electrical equipment, sabotage, workplace harassment, and other misconduct. Gowele described the initiative as a milestone in TANESCO’s transformation journey, underlining the company’s commitment to restoring public trust and improving operational efficiency.

“All reports will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality,” she assured. “Whistleblowers will be guided through a secure process, and every submission will be thoroughly investigated.”

Gowele also urged Tanzanians to embrace the platform as part of a broader effort to strengthen national accountability mechanisms. She linked the initiative to ongoing reform campaigns such as “Lipa Deni Lako” (“Pay Your Debt”), which targets defaulters with long-standing electricity arrears.

“This is not just about reporting—it’s about patriotic responsibility,” she stressed. “By using this tool, citizens can help TANESCO protect vital national resources, enhance customer service, and ensure every Tanzanian has access to reliable power.”
