🌾 In this insightful video, Tanzanian agricultural expert Tulalumba “Tullah” Mloge shares his remarkable journey and extensive experience in shaping Tanzania’s agricultural sector. Born in the Njombe region, his passion for agriculture was ignited early by his veterinarian father and nurtured through education in Germany, where he specialised in agricultural economics and international business.
🌍 Returning Home to Drive Change After 15 impactful years abroad, Tullah returned in 2013 to help implement Tanzania’s visionary “Kilimo Kwanza” (Agriculture First) initiative at SAGCOT—now expanded nationwide as AGCOT (Agricultural Growth Corridors of Tanzania). His leadership has been pivotal, currently serving as Senior Assistant, overseeing partnerships and strategic initiatives.
🚀 AGCOT’s Strategic Expansion Following its immense success in the Southern Highlands—responsible for 65% of Tanzania’s food production—SAGCOT evolved into AGCOT, driven by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision. AGCOT now aims to replicate its successful agricultural model across Tanzania’s diverse regions ahead of the original 2030 goal.
📈 Export-Oriented Ambitions AGCOT supports Tanzania’s bold target of achieving $5 billion in agricultural exports annually by 2030 through national programs such as Agenda 10/30 and the Agricultural Master Plan, solidifying agriculture’s vital role in the nation’s GDP.
♻️ Sustainable & Responsible Farming (ESG) Tullah emphasises the critical role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, established under the guidance of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. AGCOT acts as an honest facilitator, ensuring farmers and investors adopt sustainable practices that boost productivity, safeguard the environment, ensure fair labour practices, and maintain regulatory compliance.
🔗 Cluster Approach (Kongani) AGCOT’s strategic focus on high-potential agricultural clusters, including Ihemi (Njombe, Iringa) and Mbarali (Songwe, Mbeya), delivers targeted investments and rapid results.
🥑 Crop Success Highlights:
- 🥔 Potatoes: Njombe, Mbeya, and Iringa now produce 70% of Tanzania’s potatoes, with initiatives like the “Mkulima kwa Mkulima” significantly boosting yields.
- 🥑 Avocados: Since prioritising avocados in 2017, Tanzanian exports now reach key markets including China, the USA, India, and South Africa.
- 🌱 Soybeans: Expanding rapidly with exports, notably to China, linking strongly to the livestock sector.
- 🥛 Dairy: Achieved self-sufficiency in powdered milk production, with leading processing plants like ASAS in Iringa.
- 🍃 Tea: Njombe’s farmer-owned NOSCI company provides essential services, improving quality and productivity.
- 🍚 Rice: Successful export ventures to European markets, including Belgium and France.
- 🍎 Apples: Tanzania is set to become a major exporter of apples and apple products within five years.
🤝 The Power of Partnerships AGCOT thrives on collaboration—embodied by the proverb “One finger cannot break a louse” (Kidole kimoja hakivunji chawa)—uniting farmers, buyers, suppliers, banks, and insurance providers in a shared-value model.
🇹🇿 Promoting ‘Made in Tanzania’ Brands like “Mababu Chocolate,” “Asas” Milk, and “Nature Ripe” Mangoes are gaining international recognition, showcasing Tanzanian excellence.
✨ Empowering Youth & Women Tullah underscores AGCOT’s commitment to youth and women empowerment, highlighting successful initiatives turning roadside vendors into prosperous entrepreneurs and providing targeted training for modern farming techniques.
