Africa is poised to become a key player in the global hydrogen market, with 41 hydrogen projects scheduled to begin development by 2029, according to the Energy Industries Council (EIC). The EIC highlighted that North African nations, including Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco, are at the forefront of this push, leveraging abundant year-round sunshine to advance green hydrogen production and export infrastructure.
However, the EIC noted that the sector’s success hinges on securing long-term offtake agreements, establishing comprehensive regulatory frameworks, and building robust infrastructure. Without these elements, Africa’s hydrogen potential may remain untapped.
Nel Secures $7 Million Electrolyzer Order
Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of Nel, has received a $7 million purchase order for two 2.5 MW containerized PEM electrolyzers. These units will be used to produce hydrogen for a new steel mill in the United States. The unnamed customer, one of the largest US steel producers, already employs Nel’s PEM electrolyzers at two other sites in the country.
Hydrogen Transportation via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)
The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is preparing to facilitate the transportation of hydrogen and natural gas blends across the Mediterranean. The company is conducting extensive material tests at an international laboratory, with initial results already under review. Further tests are underway, and evaluations of above-ground equipment for hydrogen compatibility are set to begin in 2025. TAP plans to incrementally increase hydrogen transport capacity as market demand grows.
Ryze Power and Infener Sign Green Hydrogen Offtake Agreement
Germany-based Ryze Power has signed an agreement with Infener to distribute green hydrogen to customers in Southern Germany and Switzerland. Infener’s production hubs in Villingen-Schwenningen and Gengenbach will begin large-scale green hydrogen production around 2026-2027. Ryze Power will manage distribution to refueling stations and industrial customers, supporting the region’s shift to renewable energy.
This surge in global hydrogen initiatives reflects the increasing commitment to decarbonization and the expansion of green energy solutions across key markets.
