Despite being a top student, she often faced the humiliation of being sent home due to unpaid fees. Her mother, a Gikomba market trader, hustled tirelessly to provide for her children. Lynn vividly remembers helping her mother sell goods on the streets, moments that shaped her character and resolve.
When Lynn finally reached high school, she experienced the same struggles, often relying on her mother’s earnings to return to class. These experiences fueled her ambition to break free from the cycle of poverty and build a better future.
Pursuing Media Dreams
Lynn’s passion for storytelling led her to the East African School of Media Studies, where she pursued journalism. Despite financial challenges, she persisted, supported by her mother’s unwavering belief in her potential. Post-graduation, she faced the harsh realities of Kenya’s job market, dropping countless CVs and demos at media houses without success.
After months of frustration, Lynn sought opportunities abroad, landing a job as a barista in Dubai. While working long hours, she yearned to return home and chase her media dreams. Her time abroad, though difficult, taught her the value of perseverance and self-belief.
The Turning Point
Returning to Kenya, Lynn faced multiple setbacks, including the loss of a promising production project due to trademark issues. This period pushed her into depression, but a timely call from a friend at Tuko rekindled her dreams. Lynn joined Tuko as a reporter, where she pioneered human-interest stories that resonated deeply with audiences. Her work, such as a feature on how street women deal with menstruation, earned her recognition and respect.
Embracing Independence
